Jireh International Academy (JIA) is a private training establishment (PTE) registered by the NZQA (edumis number 7567) in 2005. Jireh is a signatory to the New Zealand Code of Practice for Pastoral Care of international students. Jireh offers technical training (in boatbuilding and carpentry) and English language instructions to international students. Since its founding it has served the Asian community with most of its students being Chinese and Korean. Its graduation rate is 98%. Its successful placement rate over four years is 80%.

Jireh is now registered with NZQA as a kaupapa Maori provider and is in the process of bringing Maori magic into our school.

Jireh is a member of the Auckland registered Master Builders Association, and has access to placements with over 40 companies associated with the boat building and constructions industry. Ninety-seven percent of our students who have gone straight into work have been placed into full time work with these companies.

Jireh's Industry Advisory Committee includes BCITO representative Richard Mason, BITO’s General Manager Chris Van De Hor and Ian Cook from the Marine Industry Association. Jireh has a Memorandum of Understanding with both the Boating Industry Training Organisation with links with the Marine Industry Association and the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation. The main advantage of these MoU’s is that gives our students the opportunity to gain an apprenticeships and/or full-time employment.

For both these trades Jireh students study in the first eight months of their first year:-

  • 3 days per week theory in the CBD,
  • 1 day at Jireh's workshop in East Tamaki (9 Barmac Ave) and Hellensville.
  • 1 day improving on their English and study time.

Thereafter for the next four months students are placed with employers for practical training and will receive approximately $200 a week to assist with travel costs and pocket money.

  • Years 2 and 3 students are placed into apprenticeships with reputable boatbuilding and carpentry employers where they will receive $25,000-$30,000 per year.

Jireh will continue to develop strong cooperation with industry and other providers for the delivery of an increasing range of quality courses/programmes. This at the end with Jireh's close relationship and involvement with the students qualifications are closely aligned to industry.

Jireh recognizes that it must meet the fast changing skills and qualification requirements of today's and tomorrow's workers and whanau in an ever changing economic debacle. Jireh seeks to make its courses and programmes accessible to all people regardless of their personal, geographical, economic and social circumstances.

TESTIMONIALS

Lee from Boatbuilding

This is a long term course for me but it gives me a chance to learn about my interests. I think it will be good for my future business back in Korea. New Zealand is famous in my country for Boat Building and I am lucky to study here.

My teacher has a lot of experience. I really like the workshops because they have a lot of tools that I can learn to use. I like Jireh because they cross credit my skills and they are also connected with BITO. They provide me with work experience later in my course and I hope that I will be able to impress them enough to get a full time job.

During my work experience I may obtain full time employment in the boating industry and if I want to do more training it will be quicker to become fully qualified.
